I fear change...
Last night Terry Wogan was on TV talking about the upcoming Eurovision song contest (must be getting closer now). All was going swimmingly until he said something about a "semi-final." Now I remember at the end of last year's contest a Eurovision boss-lady started blabbing on about some sort of two-tiered, structural reshaping craziness; that's just stupid I thought, who'd go and do something like that?...eeek, seems they've gone and done it. I hope this doesn't mean it's all gone pop idol.
Opening Lines
Never one to miss out on a 'Best of' list, I hear that Radio 2 are in the midst of a best opening song line competition....
Off the top of my head I particularly like:
Bending the rules of a late night card game; where the loser removes an item of clothing.
Morrissey - Striptease with a Difference
Ooh, I bet youre wondering how I knew, bout your plans to make me blue.
Marvin Gaye - I Heard it through the Grapevine
He had a stroke at the age of 24, it could have been a brilliant career.
Belle & Sebastian - It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career
We will laugh the day that Thatcher dies, even though we know its not right, we will dance and sing all night.
Hefner - The Day That Thatcher Dies
Got a foot in the door, god knows what for.
Elliott Smith - Stupidity
One band with particularly strong opening lines is Pulp...they got some great ones:
We like driving on a Saturday night, past the leisure centre, left at the lights.
Pulp - Joyriders
Help the aged, one time they were just like you; drinking, smoking and sniffing glue.
Pulp - Help the Aged
Oh is this the way they say the futures meant to feel? Or just 20,000 people standing in a field.
Pulp - Sorted for E's & Wizz
What are your faves?
