"Yeah, you've had your time..."
Sad news people -
Gene have called it a day
. Olympian was the first cd album I ever bought back in 1996 and over the years I've acquired pretty much all they've released....so it's with a stifled tear I bring you my all-time top ten
Gene tracks.
1. For the Dead
- Their first single is still my favourite, especially the original 4 track version. T'was one of the first guitar riffs I learnt to play.
2. Save me I'm yours
- Sleepy and sad with twirly-wirly guitars. Martin doesn't say much, but what he does is beautiful.
3. Olympian
- The first Gene song I ever heard and the reason I took an interest. I remember jumping higher and higher at the gigs.
4. You'll never walk again
- Perfect ending to any mix-tape.
5. Haunted by you
- My favourite
Gene video with Steve Mason in full guitar hero action and Martin with floppy fringe.
6. Does he have a name?
- The album artwork was now white instead of black and this opening track featured strings and atmospheric guitar glitches. Whatever they did though, it still worked.
7. Be my light, be my guide
- Back to the raw sounding Gene of their early years. Choppy guitars and big vocals.
8. Stop
- Billed as their "political" album in the music press,
Revelations actually contained some great love songs.
Stop was one of their most direct...and one of their best.
9. A Car that sped
- You've gotta love the handclapping chorus - great Radio 1 live session track too.
10. Fighting Fit
- Their most mainstream single and one of their biggest hits. I think it's the potential for air drumming that does it!
